Migrating customers to SQL Server since 2002
DB Best was founded in 2002 on the premise that customers should have the choice of data platforms to drive their business. While ANSI SQL was created to make it easier for users of the SQL language to work across different database engines, database vendors created extensions like PL/SQL, Transact SQL, DB2 SQL, etc. which complicates any migration effort. Their idea is that once they lock you into their extensions, it will be harder for customers to move to another database platform.
To solve this problem, DB Best team developed a database migration technology to help customers migrate their Oracle to SQL Server. This technology worked great and was acquired by Microsoft in 2005. It became a foundation for SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) product line to translate Oracle, Sybase ASE, IBM DB2, MySQL, and Microsoft Access database objects, ad-hoc code, and data to SQL Server. While Microsoft has ownership of SSMA, DB Best added features and supported the product as a preferred Microsoft Vendor.
Since that time, we’ve expanded our migration practice to include the key technology platforms as shown in the video below.
Microsoft over the years has designated DB Best as the partner of choice for helping customers migrate to the SQL Server data platform with multiple Microsoft Platform Modernization awards at the Microsoft Partner Summit.
DB Best authored the latest technical white papers for Oracle, Sybase ASE, and IBM DB2 to SQL Server for Microsoft as well. Here is a link to the white paper titled “Competitive Database Migration Tools and Methodology – Migration to SQL Server 2014 Using SSMA” that includes links to the other white papers that our team members created for Microsoft.
At DB Best, we don’t believe in holding back the knowledge that we have acquired over the years. In 2016 and 2017, Microsoft selected DB Best to train other Microsoft partners worldwide on the best practices of migrating from Oracle to SQL Server. Yes, we trained our competitors on migration best practices. We also blog about how to fix some of the most common problems that people have migrating to SQL Server using SSMA. Check out our customer experiences and technical deep dive posts on SSMA here.
In short, no other Microsoft partner knows database migrations to SQL Server than DB Best!
Our approach to database to SQL Server migration projects
DB Best goes well beyond standard point-to-point migration service providers – we take a vested interest in your migration strategy, providing innovation, back-end integration, accelerated return on investment, and most importantly an end-to-end solution that meets your business needs.
Starting with a migration complexity assessment, our database engineers can quickly create a strategic migration plan for migrating and transforming your current database assets. Based on this analysis, our team of experts will help you evaluate and implement the most cost-effective solutions for migrating and modernizing your database applications.
Over the last decade, DB Best has created and refined a multi-step program for helping our customer migrate their database assets. Our DB Best 12-step database migration plan allows us to easily develop a project plan using our years of experience in understanding the level of effort for each step as shown below.
Migration options
Looking to reduce the maintenance costs and increase your application’s functionality with a database migration to SQL Server?
Microsoft SQL Server reduces costs by consolidating databases, virtualizing servers, and allocating resources more effectively. Utilizing our in-house migration platform, DB Best can help you take advantage of new business opportunities while also providing increased performance, scalability, availability, and security.
Here are the different migration paths we support when migrating your workloads to SQL Server.
What makes DB Best Unique
Very simply, this is what we do – day in and day out. Here is one example of a large US public sector education organization that wanted to reduce maintenance costs due to the expensive Oracle licensing model. They asked, why pay more for a basic feature like table and index partitioning. SQL Server supports partitioning similar to Oracle at no extra cost!
Check out this video on how we helped them in the migration to SQL Server.
Our technology partners
We literally wrote the code for the SQL Server Migration Assistant for automating a good portion of the database schema and data to Oracle, Sybase, DB2, Access, and MySQL.
It turns out the same tool works great for deploying the SQL Server database on the cloud of your choice. We would like to thank Microsoft, Amazon, and Google for accepting us as a trusted advisor and partner for supporting migrations to their platform.
Technologies we use for migrations to SQL Server
Here are several technologies our experts at DB Best use to help estimate the level of effort for your database migration project and perform the automation of the database migration process.
Supporting your SQL Server solutions after the migration
As part of our migration project, we offer training, support, consulting, and managed services for your SQL Server solutions. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of maintaining the day-to-day operations of your databases and applications, be sure to check out our Operational Data Management service.
