WHY MIGRATE ORACLE TO SQL SERVER?
Many Oracle customers are concerned about being locked into a single vendor with high licensing costs, a fear that is often realized when it comes time to upgrade or modernize their environment.
Using Microsoft SQL Server, DB Best can help Oracle customers achieve the performance, scale, and security that their applications require while keeping costs under control.
Microsoft SQL Server reduces costs by consolidating databases, virtualizing servers, compressing data, allocating resources more effectively, and managing policies. Utilizing SQL Server’s self-service business intelligence capabilities and the ability for end-users to create their own ad-hoc reporting, organizations can reduce their dependency on IT.
Typical challenges we see
Checking the database performance after migration
Prior to the migration, you should have a good understanding of your database workload including any key performance metrics and frequency of peak loads. The key to a proper comparison is a mechanism to replay a workload. You can achieve this through the SQL Server Distributed Replay feature or your own load harness.
Once under load, you can evaluate your new technology by monitoring pressure on CPU, Memory, IO Operations, and network traffic.
By monitoring when the system is under pressure you can determine if your technology is properly sized or if resources need to be adjusted.
DB Best can help you profile your existing environment and then grade your migration against that profile.
Migrating indexes from Oracle to Microsoft SQL Server
At first glance, an index is just another object in the database that needs to be migrated. However, the manner in which data sits in storage is very different between Oracle and SQL Server. DB Best approaches this circumstance by examining the logical layout of the tables and relationships, paying special consideration to the business needs and use cases of the underlying data to determine an appropriate indexing strategy.
Licensing optimization
One of the major factors to be considered when we migrate Oracle to SQL is licensing. In most cases, a SQL Server Standard edition may suffice. However, there are some key features of Enterprise Edition that should be considered which may have a big impact on the security, availability, manageability, and performance of your workload.
Conversion scope
When it comes to scope there is a choice that must be made around how the conversion will proceed. The team will review all the source Oracle Schemas. Each Schema could either be migrated into its own isolated database or converted into a single database with multiple Schemas. We will work with you to consider the required security for isolation needs between the various Schemas.
Specific migration issues
There are several considerations for migrating an Oracle database. In addition to reviewing the Schemas in each Oracle instance, special attention needs to be paid to data type differences and incompatibilities.
For example, Numeric and date/time values are stored at different levels of precision and scale. Moreover, Oracle and Microsoft implement the SQL ANSI standards differently which may return different results.
Testing the converted code
It’s paramount that a QA team that is familiar with business needs and with the data review the code conversions from Oracle to SQL. Moreover, the QA team will need to verify that the converted code returns the expected data in the format and order that the business is accustomed to.
The leader in Oracle to SQL Server migrations
Our DB Best team has developed a unique methodology to migrate Oracle to SQL Server that has been proven many times over with hundreds of positive customer experiences. Being the architect and original creator of SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for Oracle, the DB Best team is THE database migration expert you can trust with your project.
Based on our vast migration experience, the DB Best team has developed in-house products like Database Compare Suite and OraMigrator, which greatly complements SSMA for Oracle.
Here are the DB Best tools that we’ve developed to optimize the Oracle to SQL Server migration process.
See how you can get the most out of SSMA from the company who originally created the tool for Microsoft.
Comparing two production databases for migration or an upgrade? Now you can do this with one powerful and simple tool that every DBA and database developer needs.
Our DBMSys platform collects data from multiple environments to develop a business case for modernization and chart an upgrade path while verifying servers conform to best practices.
OraMigratorTM is an intuitive and effective solution for Oracle to SQL Server data migration. The tool transfers data from Oracle tables to existing SQL Server tables in a few easy steps.
Getting started
Sometimes you need a helping hand to get you started. Here are some of our offers to help with assessments, using SSMA, or developing a future-state roadmap.
Save up to $1 million by migrating from Oracle to SQL Server
“Low-performing and costly” – these were major characteristics of the Oracle system for one of our customers, a leading US automotive manufacturer. In this regard, it was quite natural for them to consider migration to another database platform. We suggested changing their Oracle Database to Azure SQL Database and also moving their applications to Azure.
According to the calculations made by our experts, the customer is estimated to save 1 million dollars over the next 5 years based just on reduced licensing!
The video below depicts the migration process in details.
